Start with the shade of your natural teeth and the changes you hope to see. A dental assessment helps you decide whether whitening is appropriate for your smile.

What whitening can change

Whitening lightens natural teeth. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or other replacement teeth, so existing restorations need to be considered in the plan.

Suitability and comfort

Your dentist should check your teeth and gums before treatment. Whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. Discuss any existing sensitivity and follow the instructions for the method prescribed.

Agree on realistic expectations

The result varies and whitening is not permanent. Ask what change is realistic for your starting shade and whether any visible restorations could look different afterwards.

Before arranging your appointment

  • Tell the clinic about previous whitening and existing restorations.
  • Ask which method is proposed and what appointments it requires.
  • Confirm the price and any follow-up costs.
  • Request instructions for aftercare and whom to contact with concerns.

Whitening has limits

Whitening is intended to change the colour of natural teeth. It does not make existing crowns, fillings or veneers lighter, so the final shade may differ across a restored smile. Before treatment, identify which visible teeth already have restorations and ask how that affects the result. Avoid selecting a shade from an edited photograph.

Ask about sensitivity and maintenance

Discuss the method, supervision, possible sensitivity and how to follow the product instructions. If you already have pain or gum concerns, request an examination rather than treating colour as the only issue. Ask how the shade is reviewed and what future maintenance involves. Whitening is not a replacement for treating decay or other dental disease.
